Nokupa was launched as a result of Norkor’s love for both her heritage and her adopted home in Finland. After living in Finland for almost 14 years, Norkor fell in love with the simplicity and minimalism of Finnish design. Originally from Ghana, she wanted to bring a piece of her homeland into Finnish culture. This led her to introduce traditional Ghanaian handmade baskets, crafted for centuries using elephant grass.
This eco-friendly material is sustainable, durable, and perfectly suited for modern life. Before starting Nokupa, Norkor worked as a registered nurse, a career she pursued after studying in Finland. However, her passion for sustainability and handmade products led her to make the leap into entrepreneurship. Today, Nokupa offers a range of products, including shopping baskets, bags, home storage solutions, hats, and handmade fans, all made from elephant grass.
Empowering Artisans in Ghana and Beyond
Nokupa’s main mission is to empower women artisans in rural Ghana. Many of these women depend on basket weaving as a secondary source of income, especially during the farming off-season. However, they often struggle to find local buyers for their products, resulting in minimal income. To address this issue, Nokupa ensures that these women are paid fairly for their work by eliminating middlemen and allowing the artisans to receive payment directly.
This helps them support their families, particularly with their children’s education. By creating opportunities for these women, Nokupa is making a meaningful difference in their communities. The brand’s long-term goal is to expand this initiative to employ over 2,000 women in the coming years, aiming to combat issues like child marriages and exploitative labor conditions.

Nokupa’s vision for the future is ambitious yet grounded in its core values. The brand aims to expand its presence beyond Finland, with a goal of making its traditionally crafted, eco-friendly products available in shops worldwide. Nokupa plans to employ more artisans, particularly from marginalized communities in Ghana, and continue promoting sustainable practices such as using locally-sourced, natural materials.
