Enifer has secured €12 million in funding to establish its first commercial-scale Pekilo mycoprotein ingredient factory in Finland’s Uusimaa region. The facility will boast a production capacity of 3 million kg per year, equivalent to the protein yield from 30,000 cows but with significantly lower environmental impacts. Enifer, a spin-off from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, aims to scale the production of Pekilo, a mycoprotein developed in the 1970s for sustainable feed, and now being reintroduced for food applications. The factory aligns with the EU’s circular economy initiatives and Finland’s Sustainable Growth Programme.
